We are very lucky to be alive! Yes, most of us take our entry into this amazing planet for granted. Mother earth has survived two world wars and come out a little more tarnished but still very much alive. Why do wars occur? Is there any way in which war can become a thing of the past? One of the main tools to foster and nourish the “impossible dream” of lasting peace in this planet with a troubled history is to equip all the world’s citizens with healthy communication skills. Even if we look at communication at a very minute level, the level of the family, effective communication plays the main role in steering the members towards a peaceful, meaningful and enjoyable life. Extending it to the global level, we can see that communication makes or breaks entire communities. With the birth of democracy, there is a growing recognition that we are all members of a global family.

The birth of democracy with governments elected by the people and for the people is only a recent development in the long history of humanity. Democratic governments recognize the fundamental rights of every human being to a life of dignity which are protected under the constitution. Each and every citizen’s thoughts and opinions are meant to be valued and respected under a democracy with the freedom of expression in a responsible manner guaranteed as a constitutional right. The USA which is taken as a role model for a functional democracy has two main parties which contest each other during the elections. They mostly have opposing viewpoints on all topics ranging from the economy to health care legislation. In order to get elected into office, the presidential candidates take part in widely watched debates. India, the world’s largest democracy, follows a similar model. What would happen if these debates and oppositional politics were replaced by group discussions and collaborative associations? Why are corporate companies, UN organizations, non-governmental organizations, etc, increasingly using group discussions to steer policies and agendas?

A group discussion is a wonderful way of communication which enables all the participants to interact and listen in an open-minded manner and come out with a broader perspective. Unlike a debate where participants end up defending their own viewpoint and trying to put down their opponents viewpoints, a group discussion enables all participants to tune in and carefully consider very differing viewpoints. The pros and cons of each and every viewpoint brought to the table can be considered in an effective group discussion. The final decision or action to be taken is then arrived at after looking at an issue from all angles to come out with the best solution. A beautiful book which can be used as a reference book to organize great group discussions is the Six Thinking Hats by Edward De Bono. Imagine a world in which no heated arguments exist and are “fossil records” and replaced by mature group discussions leading to peaceful and innovative solutions. We can then say that Mother Earth is finally at peace.
